Preventative Treatment

All great dental care begins with a solid preventative program to help your gums and teeth remain healthy. At Dr. Beth Kreider’s office, we place prevention at the very top of the care that we offer because prevention is the key to excellent oral health. We offer comprehensive preventative treatment to help you avoid common yet unnecessary dental conditions such as decay, tooth loss, and infection.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

Dr. Beth Kreider takes the time to offer each of her patients a comprehensive exam at their routine dental appointments. During this exam, Dr. Kreider will do an oral cancer screening, examine the health of each tooth, and take periodontal measurements of your gums to ensure you are free from infection and other problems.

If she sees something that requires your attention, she will let you know promptly so that you can make a timely decision regarding treatment of your dental condition.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

When you visit our office for your routine preventative appointments, you will receive a professional teeth cleaning. Professional teeth cleanings help to remove the plaque and tartar between your teeth and below your gum line that you cannot reach with brushing and flossing alone.

No matter how diligent you are with your dental care, you cannot reach every area between your teeth and below your gum line. Leaving plaque and tartar on your teeth can cause decay, infection, or tooth loss.

Our professional dental cleanings, performed by a highly skilled dental hygienist will leave your mouth fresh, clean, and plaque free. Our hygienist is gentle and will make sure you are completely comfortable throughout your appointment.

The Latest in Preventative Technology

To assist Dr. Kreider with the early diagnosis of oral cancer, we use VELscope. VELscope is a special light used to detect not only oral cancer, but also the following conditions:

  • Viral, fungal, or bacterial infections
  • Squamous papillomas
  • Inflammation
  • Salivary gland tumors
  • Pre-cancer cells

Early detection and treatment is key to the successful treatment of oral cancer. By detecting cancer early, you may be able to avoid some of the more dramatic treatments.

To assist in early detection of decay, we utilize DIAGNOdent. DIAGNOdent is a special laser used to detect decay inside your tooth that may not be visible using traditional x-ray methods alone. DIAGNOdent registers readings that help Dr. Kreider determine how big your cavity is. That way, she can approach treatment appropriately.

At Dr. Beth Kreider’s office, we also use digital dental x-rays to diagnose decay, bone loss, and infection. Digital x-rays are very safe, reducing the amount of radiation by up to 90% of traditional film x-rays. Digital dental x-rays are among the lowest radiation x-rays in medicine today. We typically take x-rays once per year unless a problem arises. X-rays are still one of the most reliable methods of diagnosis and prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply put, gum disease (periodontal disease) is a serious infection in your mouth. Because our mouths constantly have bacteria, we need to brush and floss to keep them healthy. It is also necessary to have professional dental cleanings to remove the bacteria from the areas that you cannot reach with brushing and flossing alone.

Dr. Ciula and our dental hygiene team will do a special exam to determine the health of your gums. We can inform you if you are missing any areas when you brush and help you get your technique perfected. You can look for common symptoms of gum disease, too, including bleeding or swelling of the gums. If you have problems that last more than a couple of days, call us and we can help you get back on track to excellent health.

In recent years, doctors linked gum disease to serious systemic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, and respiratory diseases. That is why maintaining your oral health is so important.

We treat gum disease with a special cleaning that gently sterilizes your gums and teeth. We remove all plaque and tartar and recommend more frequent dental cleanings, if necessary. In some cases, we may recommend additional rinses or medication placed directly at the site to assist with healing.
